Sam has been with East Carolina Radio since 1999 when he signed on as play-by-play announcer for high school football broadcasts on WCNC/WZBO.  That July, Walker became sidekick for the WCNC/WZBO Morning Show.  In Winter 2000, he was upped to Sports Director for ECRG and Program Director for WCNC/WZBO.  In May 2004 when WKJX-FM launched as Mix 96, Sam was named Program Director and midday host. Walker began handling News Director duties for all of ECRG’s stations in February 2005, producing three morning newscasts each weekday.  In September 2005, he took on the morning drive shift on Mix 96. In his spare time he saves the world.

 

Sam has covered the last four ACC Men’s Basketball Tournaments along with numerous regular season ACC football and basketball games for ECRG and the North Carolina News Network, called a state championship women’s basketball game, and is a voting member of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

 

Prior to joining ECRG, Sam served as assistant general manager for the Edenton Steamers baseball club including four years as public address announcer.  While attending Campbell University, he was a manager for the men’s basketball team that played in the NCAA Tournament in 1992, and was P.A. and radio announcer for many other sports.  Sam was also P.A. announcer for Wake Forest University football in 1998.

 

Born January 25, 1973, Sam is married (Emily), they have three children (James, Jonathan, Caroline).  He resides in his native Currituck County.  He volunteers as a coach and umpire for Currituck’s recreation baseball leagues, as a Cub master for Cub Scout Pack 182 and is an Eagle Scout and also serves on the vestry of the Currituck Episcopal Mission.

 

Hobbies:  Soaking bunker at The Point, skiing, visiting historic sites and theme parks especially Walt Disney World, cooking barbecue (Sauce: Vinegar base with some ketchup and a touch of Texas Pete)

 

Favorite Authors:  Tom Clancy, Hunter S. Thompson, currently reading autobiographies of the Mercury through Apollo astronauts.

Career History:  Besides radio, have also worked in parents’ grocery store, mini-golf in Kitty Hawk, Super Hero (RadioMan), stocking shelves for Nabisco, and cashier for Food Lion

 

The Rest Of The Story:  Since I was a kid, I always wanted to work at a small radio station.  It just so happened I could do it and still be in Currituck.  It doesn’t get any better than this.

Steve's been in radio since 1989 when he graduated High School in DeWitt, MI. Since then, he's taken his love for music to the airwaves in Michigan and now North Carolina with his Afternoon Drive weekdays from 2-6pm here on Mix 96.

Steve loves music of all kinds - and has alphabetically and meticulously organized his collection of over 1400 CD's, while doing the same with over 400 DVD's and his socks. A geek? Perhaps. But an organized one nonetheless. In his free time, Steve enjoys spending time with his two children Timothy and Emilie, and his lovely wife Holly. He also enjoys watching all Sports and is an avid fan of Professional Wrestling, Reading, Blogging and watching movies.
